Hardware-in-the-loop of electric drives and Power electronic systems using RT-Lab PC Clusters and FPGAs

Objective

This lecture presents real-time simulation technologies of electric drives and power electronics systems with Hardware-in-the loop and presents recent developements in industrial electronics.

 

Outline

This oral session presents the challenges of simulating electric drives power electronic system and a vision of real-time simulation for the next decade. It also shows the real-time simulators' evolution, requirements, technology trends and difficulties encountered for simulation of very large dynamic systems.
This session also presents typical applications that illustrate the fundamental concepts involved when simulating electric drives and power electronic systems with Hardware-in-the-loop. Figure 1 illustrates an example of an HVDC transmission line presented in this session. Industrial solutions are also describe and graphical user interface and development environments are also presents (Figure 2).

This session puts emphase on new technologies to make real-time simulation of complex plant models using FPGA cards and key advantages of this kind of solution:
- Easy Simulink integration and interface of FPGA designs (controllers, small machine models, PWM modulation units, etc.),
- Very fast computation of plant models, permitting very fast closed-loop testing of high-bandwidth controllers,
- Very fast I/O: D/A and A/D update rates of 1 microsecond and 2 microseconds respectively, and a digital I/O resolution of 10 ns.
